IAVM 2007
Please consider joining UKVPMs, an online discussion group for volunteer managers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. UKVPMs is where you can continue discussing and asking questions about the issues brought up at IAVM.
Online Mentoring: How to Make it Work for You
This presentation will be based on:
- Sanchez Elementary School Online Mentoring Program
- Online culture and online community
It's becoming the norm for mission-based organizations (NGOs, NPOs and others) to use Internet tools to work with volunteers (including board members), staff, donors and others. This section of my site provides ideas and resources on how to work with others online, in language that's easy to understand for those considering or just getting started in using online technologies with volunteers, donors and other supporters. It includes an overview of the dynamics of online culture & community, tips for using both synchronous (IM, audio conferencing, etc.) and asynchronous (email, web-based fora, etc.) tools with volunteers, tips for podcasting, suggestions regarding using online social networking, and much more.
- The Virtual Volunteering Project materials regarding online mentoring
- Why Every Staff Person Should Regularly Read At Least One Online Discussion Group
- E-Volunteerism Roundtable on Volunteer Managers Interacting Online (available for a fee in November)
This roundtable online discussion was focused on answering these questions: Why should people in our field interact online? What can they get and why should they give? Isn't this all going to replace face-to-face contact? What are the different means of online interaction people can engage? Where might the technology go in the future and how might this change the nature of online interaction for volunteer managers? Please note that E-Volunteerism is a fee-based site.
