Respondent's Role in Working with Volunteers at Organization
New Jersey Online, through our community Connection project, offers free Web sites to volunteer, non-profit, community and civic organizations throughout New Jersey. Each group receives their own URL and seven pages with which to convey information. Launched in Sept. of 1998, Community Connection already has over 2000 groups.
How did you hear about this Project?
Erik Schmidt at www.nationalservice.org recommened I contact you. He feels your web site is a perfect place for us to let people know about this opportunity.
What other staff have involved volunteers virtually at your organization?
We interact with volunteers, every day, by helping them create their free Web site with us. We also offer workshops (free) to volunteers and attend conferences.
Approximately how many of your online volunteers provide technical assistance to your staff or to other volunteers?
It is hard to put an exact number on this. I would have to say many people.
Please describe the kinds of activities these technical assistance volunteers provide to your organization:
People who are benefiting from Community Connection Web sites often help other people and groups in their communities build their web sites.
Approximately how many of your volunteers provide direct support to clients / recipients of service via the Internet?
5
Please describe the kinds of volunteer activities these direct contact volunteers provide to your organization:
People just naturally have involved themselves. They network and share information.
How did you recruit the volunteers you involve(d) via the Internet?
They have done it on their own because they are so happy with the opportunity we have offered them.
How did you screen/orient the volunteers you involve(d) via the Internet?
Community Connection members spread the word on their own.
How do you supervise and recognize/reward online volunteers for their contributions?
In the New Year we will be sponsoring a contest which will reward and recognize volunteers.
Have you ever surveyed these online volunteers about their experiences with your organization?
Yes, we have.
What factors in your organization have promoted the success of your virtual volunteering program?
We are offering volunteers a service (web site) which is empowering for networking and conveying information.
What factors in your organization have impeded the success of your virtual volunteering program?
We have met with only great success.
