Note: the Smithsonian Transcription Center was launched in July 2013 and I'm sure there are news articles about that launch in 2013, I just have not had time to find them all and list them here.

June 11, 2013: Virtual Volunteering Be Right for You. Social Work Helper. "Virtual volunteering is basically doing volunteer work using the Internet."

June 3, 2013: UN On-line Volunteers and World Heritage. Putting together an infographic on rhinoceros conservation requires the coordinated input of not only people knowledgeable about rhinoceros conservation and World Heritage sites, but also of a talented graphic artist. "In this case, Paris-based UNESCO staff turned to the United Nations On-line Volunteers web site (www.onlinevolunteering.org) and placed a call for just such a person. Suzie Watt generously responded to the call, and with the information and ideas fed to her by her UNESCO counterpart, she gradually assembled the attractive and compelling 'The Last Rhinos' infographic in her studio in Sydney, Australia."

May 31, 2013. Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Virtual Volunteering: BMO Provides Employees with Remote Volunteering Opportunities. "BMO Financial Group today announced that it is introducing innovative remote volunteering projects to provide greater access for employee participation in its annual BMO Volunteer Day on June 5th... In Canada, the remote volunteer project is being launched in partnership with ACCES Employment; it will match remote volunteers with job seekers from diverse backgrounds who are facing barriers to employment. The volunteers will work with the job seekers to help improve their overall interpersonal communication skills through simulated phone interviews."

February 23, 2013: The Virtues of Virtual Volunteering and Online Fundraising. Forbes. The article opens with the very unfortunate an inaccurate lead: "Your employees want to perform community service; they really, really do…but amidst their busy schedules they just can’t seem to find the time." The implication being that virtual volunteering somehow does not take time.

February 11, 2013. Humanity Road: A Virtual Volunteer Organization in Disaster Response. "Digital volunteerism is quickly establishing itself as a consistent feature of crisis events. In previous research, we examined an emergent group of digital volunteers, the self-termed voluntweeters, who came together after the Haiti earthquake to assist in response efforts. This study expands that work, following a subgroup of the voluntweeters as they organize into a formal response agency. Humanity Road is a first-of-its-kind, formal non-profit in the domain of digital disaster response. The organization is almost entirely virtual, bringing together volunteers from all over the world with a mission that includes educating the public on how to survive disaster events and assisting in response efforts during events by filtering, verifying, and routing crisis-related information."

January 15, 2013. Virtual volunteering: Service time that fits into anyone’s schedule. Michigan State University Extension "Virtual volunteering can be a good solution for people who want to spend more time being active as volunteers but cannot make more traditional forms of volunteering work."
