Reading is Fundamental (RIF)

Jennifer San Pedro (VISTA 1999-2000) recommends that you contact the Sanchez librarian Jan Hill about this program. Recruit AmeriCorps members to help the librarian put books out, talk to kids, and, sometimes, reading aloud (the VISTA can assist with these activities as well.

"Just get the schedule from her and pass it around during a meeting and have the members sign up for a time slot. It really is fun to do."

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) is America's largest non-profit children's and family literacy organization. A report from the National Research Council found that consistent access to books and other reading materials can increase children's motivation to read and help them keep pace academically with their peers.

You can read more about this report, other literacy research, and other organizations that deal with literacy issues on the RIF Web site. It includes resources you might find helpful in coordinating this program at Sanchez.
