virtual volunteering resources
for volunteers

  • Are you ready to volunteer virtually?
This should be the FIRST document you read if you are considering online volunteering.

  • How to FIND virtual volunteering opportunities
Lots of advice for finding online volunteering opportunities, including online mentoring/teletutoring experiences.

  • General tips for volunteers
    working on virtual assignments

If you are going to try online volunteering, or if you are already engaged in such, this is a must read.

  • Dos and don'ts for
    technical assistance volunteers

Are you helping an agency with a subject or activity in which you have some expertise, or do you plan to do so? Then this document is a must read.

  • Handbook for Online Volunteers
This handbook also includes a section on "Resources and Tools for Online Volunteers," developed in large part by online volunteers who assisted the Virtual Volunteering Project and with advice from various collaborating organizations in the past year; this section offers suggestions for using web search engines, shareware, freeware, preventing computer viruses, learning .html, finding news articles on a particular subject, creating databases, moderating online discussion groups, and other resources and tools to help a volunteer undertake an online assignment successfully.

  • Resources for Volunteer Moderators and Facilitators
    of Online Discussion Groups

Many online volunteers moderate (approve all posts) or facilitate (keeping the discussion flowing) online discussion groups, either via e-mail or via a chat/real-time platform. We recommend these resources for those taking on the role of discussion group host.

  • General advice for volunteers
for both online and offline opportunities.
Information on finding the right volunteer opportunity and making the most out of your volunteer activities can be crucial to making a real difference and having a rewarding experience as a volunteer. This resource helps volunteers explore how volunteerism can influence a career, volunteering with your family, and how to find the right agency and opportunity to match your interest. There are also links to resources to help you while you volunteer, and how to find and prepare for an international volunteering experience. Many of these resources are written by internationally-recognized volunteerism and volunteer management expert Susan Ellis.

  • VIRTUALVOLS, an e-mail-based discussion group
    for online volunteers

This is a place for online volunteers working with any agency to ask questions of other online volunteers, share resources that have been helpful in virtual volunteering activities, etc.

  • Netiquette Guides
These aren't our materials, but if you are going to volunteer online, these are a must read:

  • Have you helped or do you help an organization via your home or work computer?
Then We Want to Hear From You!
